Sharing from a new approach

If there’s a phenomenon which defines the technological evolution of the last five years that’s social networking. Likewise, if there’s an action that build social networks up that’s “sharing”. The first social networks that showed up were about sharing personal info, thoughts, photos and videos as well as other media files. Then, smartphones entered the scene and that was a window of opportunity for the emergence of a new type of social networks such as location sharing or microblogging. However, the evolution didn’t stop there. Although it’s increasingly harder to innovate and to find creative and added-value social networks, there are coming up new ways of sharing content with your friends. This is precisely what we’re going to focus on this week: social networks apps for Android that bring a new approach.

Let’s start by Gowalla, a Worldwide social guide made by users. It works like a traditional social network: you can add friends, post, like places that you like, check your friend’s Wall, etc. Actually you can sign up this social network via Facebook Connect. Gowalla allows you to discover places that you friends have visited, local suggestions and experts recommendations. This is a kind of “safe bet” guide. Likewise, you can also check-in places around the World, add comments and suggestions, share photos, recommend places to your friends and much more. The only catch is that you cannot add new cities or places, that’s a developer issue. In order to make it more social, it would be great to have freedom to add cities and places.

One of the flaws of being part of a dozen of social networks it’s the fragmentation, that’s it, it’s difficult to come together all your activity in social networks. This is what Posterous Spaces aspires to become to. Actually, it’s a kind of blog which integrates lots of social networks. You just need to allow Posterous to catch your posts from the ones that you signed up. This way, you can post simultaneously your tweets, Facebook posts, LinkedIn updates, Buzz, Identica… Of course you can choose the content you want to share and who’s able to see it. Posterous social integration is just impressive. Manage all your post in a single space. A good way to create your digital identity. Unfortunately, you cannot perform from the app all you can from the web version.

Glympse is a social network for sharing location with some features that make it different from other apps of its category. First, unlike most of social network, there’s no need to create an account. Glympse works different: you just need to download the app and share your location in real-time. You can add your profile pic, view your check-in history, integrate other social networks… without signing up. Actually it gets linked to your phone. Second, it allows you to share location by different channels: Share via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook or SMS. Share where you are and where you’re going. Share expected time to reach the place, distance and average speed. Finally, you can attach to your sharing a link to Glympse website, in order to let the people you’re sharing with tracking where you’re and where you’re going. They don’t need to create an account either. Glympse doesn’t have a badges system. It’s a basic sharing app with interesting features but no frills.

Movies knowledge is culture…

So, wouldn’t you like to know more about them? For this reason, this week we’ve made a videoreview compilation of three great movies apps for Android that will help you to know about actors, dates, directors, budgets, rumours, curiosities and every single thing that surrounds films and movies. Thus, the following videoreview includes three apps: IMDb, which is a the biggest database regarding movies info; Movie Trivia which is obviously a trivia to test your knowledge regarding films and, finally, Worth Watching Lite, an interesting app with rates, reviews from critics, comments and recommendations in order to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Hope you enjoy it

Back to the movies 2

Today in AndroidZoom we’re still talking about the relationship between Android and movies. In fact, there are many Android apps that feature the world of film, but it’s kind of hard to find one that covers all the topics you want. The other day we included IMDb and two other different applications, today is time for Worth Watching Lite, Oscars Trivia and John Hughes Soundboard.

The first one this week is Worth Watching Lite, an app that uses Rotten Tomatoes score to create the lists of the upcoming movies, the current ones and even the dvd releases and top box office. That way, you can easily check out if a movie is good or at least if the critics liked it before you watch it. Also, see if your most expected movies are coming soon or not. Besides all those features, the app is well designed and the usability is excellent, making it one of the best film apps out there.

Trivias are fun and entertaining and movie trivias are among the most popular ones. Here, you’ll be able to answer as many questions as you want regarding the Academy Awards, both old hollywood and current films. The categories are actors, actresses, movies and directors and you can change whenever you want, as there’s no limited number of questions. That can be a problem if you want a little more of a challenge and competition but it’s equally entertaining and fun to test your film knowledge.

Last, but not least, we have a really curious app, especially made for those who still enjoy watching 80’s movies or are nostalgic about past times. This soundboard includes several popular and classic quotes of five of the most iconic movies from John Hughes. That is:  Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Weird Science and Sixteen Candles. Some of the sound quotes are: “Bueller, bueller…” or “How can I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?”. You can set them as ringtones, too.

Whatever you want, you got it. If you want current information about movies, choose the first app. On the contrary, if you’d like to prove your knowledge in front of your friends, download the trivia and start answering the questions. And if you’re a nostalgic from the 80s, don’t hesitate to try the soundboard.
Well, that’s been the end of our Movie related apps Week. Don’t forget to visit our brand new G+ profile, comment what any other movie app you’d recommend and share whatever you like best.
Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it“. Listen to Ferris and have a nice week, AndroidMovieholics!

Three management games videoreviewed

We’ve released a new navigable videoreview on management games, smurfing a blockbuster as Smurfs’ Village; a well-known time management game, good for all SuperMarket Mania 2 and an original game developed by an independent company, we’re talking about Game Dev Story. Hope you like to see how they are in action and remember that you can read further about these games looking for their review at AndroidZoom.com.

Don’t forget either to like it (you know, thumbs up), share it or, even better, to leave a comment about the videoreview or the games featured.

Let’s go to the movies with Android

No matter the high price of theaters, people still watch and will keep watching movies. Movies help you forget the routine of your life and entertain yourself during two hours. Movies can be watched anytime, alone, with your friends or with your partner. Movies can generate discussion and create good memories. And they can also be the stars of good Android applications.

First of all, we want to talk about the greatest of them all. IMDb, one of the best websites regarding film information (and maybe in general) has an equally good Android application. IMDb is a complete database of movies, actors, directors and many more things related to film. It includes a wide selection of trivia, trailers and reviews. If you’re in the theater, watching a movie and the actress looks really familiar… now you can just grab your phone and easily clear up your doubts and prove you were right. You can also check in whenever you’re watching a movie and vote it afterwards. Easy to use, complete and sometimes life-saver.

Sometimes you’re bored and want to check your knowledge about something. Why not about movies? Movie Trivia Taglines provides a wide selection of movie taglines (that is, the advertising poster lines). The idea is pretty good, as sometimes it depends on whether you’ve seen it or not, while others you just need to use your common sense. The design is not good, though, and the usability could be better, but in general is a really entertaining game that you can also play with your friends.

Lastly, we wanted to leave the Hollywood universe behind us and approach a different kind of film world: shorts. This app will let you watch all kind of European shorts divided into several categories and genres. This way, you’ll have access to other film perspectives, in case you want to discover new things and inspire yourself. Why not check it out? Great design and usability.

We hope you have a great movie week and enjoy these three applications. Let us know what you think, androidmovieholics!

Classic management games with new approaches

In the last post we introduce you some challenging time-based management games for Android. Although that’s a fashion-type of management games, we can also find on the market Classic-like management games that fit with some of us, the nostalgic players of Sim City, Civilization and the 90’s tycoon games. Given that we don’t like showing you just packs of similar or identical games, this time, we’ve chosen four games that can be tagged as “classic” in three different ways: regarding graphics, gameplay, theme and business.

Game Dev Story: classic graphics, new business project

This is specially for nostalgic of 2D ultra-pixelated games. Actually, it reminds Habbo graphics, which isn’t that old, although it has been taking advantage of this simple isometric graphics for a long time. However, what you will have to manage is a Videogame developing startup, what goes beyond the typical restaurant or theme park management game. You will be the responsible of taking care of hiring your programmers, graphic designers and sound technicians in order to create a videogame able to sell one million copies. Thus, you will have to go deep even in marketing strategies while you try to build a kind environment in the office to avoid stress. Despite its 8bit-like graphics, there are lots of things to be taken into account. Challenging, addictive and inspiring. And that lovely NES-feeling.

Rock The Vegas: classic plot, new gameplay Building a city is a recurrent theme for management games. We’ve played dozens of them. We’ve even built a city of gambling and vice like Vegas several times. However, what we face here is a new gameplay. Actually, Rock The Vegas is a mix of a tycoon, city builder, gambling and social game for Android. Since the purpose is building a Vegas prototype, you don’t have to focus just on how it looks like and how inhabitable the city is. You have to have a comprehensive control over every single detail of what’s going on in there. What’s more, the game is social, what means you can add friends, visit their city to catch some ideas about how to manage your own Vegas. Rock The Vegas is backed by Paradise Island, My Country and other great management games, which makes it even more reliable. .

Smurfs’ Village: classic theme for a new platform

What if we rescue Smurfs from our childhood? Better, what if we start to interact with them instead of only watch them on TV? That’s what makes Smurf’s Village for Android so charming. The cartoon-based graphics are really good. You will feel like you really are surrounded by smurfs and afraid of Gargamel. You can control well known characters and resolve some quest. Most of this quest are mini-games that make the game even funnier. Build, collect wood, fruit and other supplies. Decorate it to your liking and be ready for a Gargamel’s visit. You can share your achievements via Facebook and also play offline. Despite the theme, Smurf’s village is for all audiences. You will get caught by it, we promise.

Shopper’s Paradise: Classic business management from the other side of the shop window We’ve played dozens of store management games. Hiring employees, choosing where to place items, decorating the shop… are the usual actions in this kind of games. However, this one is different. You control a retail empire and try to surpass your competitors and achieve the business goals within the time. The approach though, is different. This time, your perspective is from outside; you don’t know about the customers, you need to take care of the stores in a more general way and sell them when they don’t provide you enough benefits. Although the graphics are simple, the games is quite addictive. You can choose different levels of difficulty and perform lots of actions. Be the ruler of the shopping district. .

Manage your life in a game

There are moments when we don’t want to play the typical casual game where the only goal is to explode colored bubbles. There are times when you want something more, something that’s more real life-like, even if you’d never actually do it. (Pet Salon anyone?)

Time management games are exactly what we’re talking about. They give us the perfect escape from our seemingly boring lives and let us experience other jobs and activities for a little while. It’s not a relaxing work in any way, as you need to accomplish a multitude of tasks in a short time, try to manage everything and be sure nobody waits endlessly. Time management games require patience and organization skills and the ability of staying at peace, not letting anything bother you.

The following apps are the ones that we’ve chosen in our list:

In Supermarket mania, you need to help a worker, Nikki, so as to help her deal with the customers, which often is a hard task. This time, she’ll be joined by three other colleagues that will be there to help her.. As usual, you need to be careful with Mr. Torg, the villain’s unfair competition. This game is lots of fun and a wonderful time-waster.

The second time management game we wanted to talk about is Airport Mania, in which you have to manage the landings and take-offs at the airport. Your tasks are to tap on the planes and select the tracks, bring them to the boarding gate, leave the passengers and many more. The trick is to do all these things in time, as you’ll get more points. Although it seems like a kids game, it’s actually appropriate for all audiences, who will be soon hooked.

Pretty Pet Salon is a management game that includes a tutorial and many points to earn in order to unlock features in the store. The game is appropriate for children if you manage to make them understand the in-app purchase and the difference between real and in-game money. Each day lasts two minutes and a half, making the game rather stressful but worth it when you have success.

My Car Salon is the last application in our list. You’re the owner of a repair shop and you need to give the customer’s everything their car needs and do it quickly so they don’t leave upset. The tasks might be wash, repair and others and you’ll need to move the cars around the salon and prioritize the ones that have been waiting more time. As any other similar game, the difficulty grows as the game progresses.

More kids with phones

We’re still on our week devoted to kids. Kids, who sometimes lighten up our day and other times can be little monsters. But we don’t want them to use the wrong applications, do we?

So that’s why today we’ve chosen two kid friendly games that will have your child entertained and learning at the same time. In addition, we’ve included also a parental control app to prevent your kids from using the wrong applications or the ones that you don’t consider appropriate for them.

Kids Doodle is a simple application  that turns your device into a blackboard where kids can draw and paint with virtual crayons. It’s especially made for them, so it’s really easy to use and only includes a few buttons: new dooddle, crayons, undo, rubber and movie. Perfect for those with artistic aspirations.

The developer is specialized in education games, so you can check them all out if you’re interested.

Last but not least, Android Parental Control, the one that we talked about. This app is not adressed to the kids, but to the parents instead and it’s used for selecting the applications that you don’t want your kids to use (they would need a password for that). In addition, you can enable Safe Sandbox, which only shows the allowed apps. Perfect solution to protect your children and your important data.

Kids with Android Phones

Nowadays, kids are familiar with technologies sooner than ever. They start playing with the remote control, using the computer to play games and paint, playing with the smartphones… even if they don’t know what they’re actually doing. But they love it. Every day more, kids are dropping the typical games we used to know and love and are giving in to the extremely-addictive-yet-not-appropriate-for-their-age world of technologies.

We wouldn’t think of giving a kid an Android phone (or any other device whatsoever) but we believe phones can be the parent’s best ally when it comes to having the kid entertained and calmed while you’re doing something important or simply need time to relax.

This post is about that. It features three popular kid friendly apps that your child can enjoy while learning at the same time (and you do other stuff). We also wanted to include one particular game that you can use together.

First of all, we have Wood Animals for Kids, an application that features several simple games for children that can teach them about animals and their sounds and activities. The app is very complete and taken care of. There are three languages available, advice for parents and a guidance through the game. It’s nothing new but it’s still a great app for children. There’s a paid version with more animals and activities.

Secondly, we have Kids Mode: Kid Games + Videos, which lets you set a dashboard for kids. You can add as many apps as you can and even lock the app. In addition, it includes didactic games (art studio, storybooks, baby songs and kid cartoons) for kids aged 1 to 8. There’s also parental control information that sends you a weekly report on what your kids have been playing and a violence filter.

Lastly, Moon Secrets, which is a pretty special app. It’s especially made for putting your kids to sleep and it features a short story with a relaxing tune and animations which you and your kids can interact with. You can let them read it or you can read it yourself, but they will sure enjoy it and want to repeat it some other nights.

Loving food, enjoying eating

It’s time to feed our starving stomach with some interesting food-related apps. In the last post, we’ve reviewed three recipe-like apps to improve your cooking skills. This time, we want to approach the issue in a different way. Thus, we’re introducing you three new apps: an useful one, a fun game and a social network all of them related to food, although not on how to cook it! Do you remember your parents saying “don’t play with your food”? Ok, it’s time to forget it, at least for a while.

Let’s start with Grocery Helper, is an app monitor the usage of your grocery items. It allows you to design your own grocery list in a few taps as well as maintain the inventory level of an item. You have to select among all the categories, the items you want to buy and, the unit and the quantity . Lots of stores have been integrated into the app. This way you can also select where you’re going to buy each item. Actually, unit, location and store fields are editable. Once all the items selected, Grocery Helper will generate your own shopping list. Bear in mind that you can generate as many list as you can naming them as you want (type of items, stores, etc). Although the interface could be improved, the idea is really useful: leave the paper shopping list at home, and add a new use to your smartphone.

Stand O’Food® is a simple and entertaining game in which you embody a waiter hired by a Burguer Restaurant franchise. The purpose of the game is to serve the customer’s demands as fast as possible in order to maximize the profit of the restaurant. Check the order and tap to choose the correct ingredients for cooking the sandwich. You have to invest your money in upgrading condiments and equipment. There are two game modes: Quest and Lunch Rush, with more than 100 levels and more than 80 different sandwiches to create. Challenging game, perfect timewaster.

Tasterous is a social network for sharing, commenting and rating restaurants and dishes. It’s cross-platform and works similar to other photo-sharing social networks like Mobli or Instagram, although it also includes a check-in system like Foursquare. It uses GPS to show nearby bars and restaurants. Check them out and discover reviews by other users. Follow them in order to increase your community of “food” reviewers. Share places, photos, comments and ratings through other social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The app is set in a user-friendly interface. Thus, you won’t have problem to get the hang of it, specially if you’re used to Foursquare, Instagram and other similar social networks. However, Tasterous is a new concept of social network. It’s the end of uncertainty regarding restaurant choice. Go and order after reading a review of your friends and contacts.
