Do not keep out of reach of children.

This week is fully dedicated to families and we wanted to talk about our opinion when it comes to the relationship between mobile phones and family members.

Kids and phones seems to be a constant topic nowadays. Everyone agrees that children should not use technologies as much as they do, but developers keep creating original kid-friendly applications, ones that are well-thought, well-designed and try to give us a new perspective. With all these applications, a new category has been created in the world of mobile applications. Although it’s still growing there are already many apps that we can fit into it.

We’d like to recommend these and hear which you use or would like to use:

One important thing that technology has brought is GPS location system. Thanks to it, we can track the location of people and know that they’re safe and sound. One family app that gathers together this characteristics is Family Locator.
Family Locator is an extremely useful app that helps us track our family members and communicate with them. You just need to install the app in all the devices (pay extra if it’s not Android or Apple) and start checking in in places. With a simple and clean design, you can tell your family where you are, view the location history and send messages. The app is also used for Panic Alarms (press the button if you’re in danger and it will automatically send a message to all the contacts) and to view the safety places nearby. This one works well and helps families be aware of everything that’s going on.

Regarding kids, we’ve chosen three apps that can entertain them while they learn something. With Lil painter Coloring Book, children can paint many illustrations with the tools available (paint bucket, crayon, paint brush, spray, chalk) or even choose to draw from scratch. If you want to stimulate your kid’s creativity, this is a perfect app for doing so.  Let them paint beautiful illustrations and try out the many tools they can use.

In the end, smartphones can perfectly play the role of our old and beloved chalkboards and have the advantage of taking them with you everywhere.

Doodle Darlings Ditties Lite is based on the lovely website: The doodle darlings. The main characters are four cuddly toys: Bunny, Lion (our favorite), Horse and Dinosaur and if you buy one of them, the 10% will directly go to a Children’s Research Hospital. The lite version of this app lets your kids play with Bramble Bunny, in which they use their fingers to guide the bunny down the maze and find the carrot. A good initiative that can be checked out for free and maybe even become fond of the lion, the horse, the dinosaur and the bunny.

We should thank developers for developing games entertaining and stimulating at the same time.

On the other hand, Baby Try To Speak is also related to animals, but with a different approach. This application is made with the purpose of helping kids become familiar with animals and their sounds. Baby Try To Speak  has a great design and it’s really easy to use even for them, including a few visual buttons with a concrete function. Children hey can learn how to pronounce the animals’ names and recognize them by their sounds. The app includes a little game where they need to match the animal with the sound and in addition, extra languages are available and the collection continues with three more editions featuring different animals.

It should be easy to understand that, the sooner kids make contact with daddy’s or mommy’s phone, the easier will be to teach them to use it reasonably. Once they’ve grown up, they’ll be the ones who ask us how we lived without all these devices around – but that’s another story.

Specialized social network for Android

We’ve made a compilation of three of the apps we reviewed last week and here’s the outcome: a new navigable videoreview on three specialized social networks. We’ve chosen three different topics in order to show you the wide range of possibilities that this kind of social networks are putting on the table. Thus, you will find travel, fashion and movies/series/books social networks. Give it a go and discover the one that fits with you.

We hope you enjoy it

Black Friday’s fever on AndroidZoom.com

.

.

.

Thanksgiving is a lovely day to catch up with family and to celebrate the beginning of Christmas Holidays. However, what most of the people really love is what comes the day after: Black Friday, the day to update your wardrobe, to start Christmas gifts shopping or simply to make the most of the big deals that brands offer during the weekend. We all keep in mind those images of people waiting for the shopping mall opening, getting mad to reach first the best deal. Although, for some items you still have to face that situation, there’s a place where you can easily find big deals with no struggles and no queues: AndroidZoom “On Sale” tab. There you can find those Android apps and games that are offered with % off as well as those that have become free. A smart way to discover at a glance, the best Black Friday’s deals.

Lots of developers have already announced that are offering discounts on their apps and games during the whole Black Weekend. For example, Gameloft is offering some free games for a two-hour period each day and some other titles at $0.99. They will unveil the titles on Twitter throughout the weekend. Likewise, other titles like paid Plants Vs. Zombies, Swiftkey X, Shazam Encore and many many others seems that will offer at least a half off. Instead of looking at Twitter, Facebook or hundreds of developer’s official websites, we recommend you to check “On Sale” tab on our website to get all the deals that will be launched throughout the weekend. There you will find all the deals put together and updated every few minutes.

We’re really glad to see that these traditional marketing strategies (that are actually right) are undertaken by Android apps & games developers. We expect this kind of initiatives to expand because they benefit both: users and developers. Given that we believe this will happen ever more, we provide you the tools to make even easier the discovery of Android apps & games.

Have a great Black Friday!

Social Networking: movies, shows, fashion and games

Social networking, as we said on Tuesday, has definitely defined technological evolution. We can’t conceive of a day without checking our Facebook/Twitter account and sharing our thoughts, pictures or favorite songs with the world. We want to know what’s going on with our friends or family and this has become the easiest way to do that. We share important pieces of our life constantly and we expect our friends to tell us what they think about it.
We’ve heard our favorite music, movies and books say a lot about who we really are and maybe that’s why we tend to share our likes with our hundreds of online friends: to express and define ourselves.

GetGlue is the perfect application for that. Based on a check-in and badge system you can share what you’re doing at the moment, regarding to your favorite activities, that is: watching movies, tv shows, music, books, etc. That creates a profile that perfectly fits you and others can see if they have similar tastes. In addition, you need to collect as many badges that might even make you earn discount coupons. The app also includes a recommendation system that tries to suggest more movies, shows and books you’ll like based on your check-ins and scores. Of course, this works better if you connect it to Facebook, Twitter or Foursquare to let your friends know about it and encourage them to join the website and download the app.

Games are also really popular nowadays, as we tend to spend our subway trips using them in order to not get bored. Mocospace is a social gaming network, where you need to create an account and you can start playing to thousand of games (poker, management, casual). The app is based on competing with other users while chatting with them and challenging their scores. The games are not well-developed but they’re fun, entertaining and addictive. This app could improve its appearance and design in order to become more attractive to the users.

Lastly, fashion is one of the areas that technology has helped the most. Now you can share your daily outfits and favorite fashion styles with your friends and people who have the same interests. But that’s not all.

Thanks to apps like Pose, a fashion social network, you can discover new styles and outfits that you might try later, as well as posting your daily pictures of what you’re wearing. Browsing through your friends’ pictures is easy, and commenting on their pictures will make them notice you and you’ll probably earn more followers.  We could say that Pose is the perfect application for fashionistas who want to get inspiration and express their fashion advice to the rest of the world. In conclusion, great app with many features and the possibility to interact with other users.

What other new types of social networks do you know? Which are your favorites? Let us know!

Have a nice week, AndroidZoomers!

Sharing from a new approach

If there’s a phenomenon which defines the technological evolution of the last five years that’s social networking. Likewise, if there’s an action that build social networks up that’s “sharing”. The first social networks that showed up were about sharing personal info, thoughts, photos and videos as well as other media files. Then, smartphones entered the scene and that was a window of opportunity for the emergence of a new type of social networks such as location sharing or microblogging. However, the evolution didn’t stop there. Although it’s increasingly harder to innovate and to find creative and added-value social networks, there are coming up new ways of sharing content with your friends. This is precisely what we’re going to focus on this week: social networks apps for Android that bring a new approach.

Let’s start by Gowalla, a Worldwide social guide made by users. It works like a traditional social network: you can add friends, post, like places that you like, check your friend’s Wall, etc. Actually you can sign up this social network via Facebook Connect. Gowalla allows you to discover places that you friends have visited, local suggestions and experts recommendations. This is a kind of “safe bet” guide. Likewise, you can also check-in places around the World, add comments and suggestions, share photos, recommend places to your friends and much more. The only catch is that you cannot add new cities or places, that’s a developer issue. In order to make it more social, it would be great to have freedom to add cities and places.

One of the flaws of being part of a dozen of social networks it’s the fragmentation, that’s it, it’s difficult to come together all your activity in social networks. This is what Posterous Spaces aspires to become to. Actually, it’s a kind of blog which integrates lots of social networks. You just need to allow Posterous to catch your posts from the ones that you signed up. This way, you can post simultaneously your tweets, Facebook posts, LinkedIn updates, Buzz, Identica… Of course you can choose the content you want to share and who’s able to see it. Posterous social integration is just impressive. Manage all your post in a single space. A good way to create your digital identity. Unfortunately, you cannot perform from the app all you can from the web version.

Glympse is a social network for sharing location with some features that make it different from other apps of its category. First, unlike most of social network, there’s no need to create an account. Glympse works different: you just need to download the app and share your location in real-time. You can add your profile pic, view your check-in history, integrate other social networks… without signing up. Actually it gets linked to your phone. Second, it allows you to share location by different channels: Share via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook or SMS. Share where you are and where you’re going. Share expected time to reach the place, distance and average speed. Finally, you can attach to your sharing a link to Glympse website, in order to let the people you’re sharing with tracking where you’re and where you’re going. They don’t need to create an account either. Glympse doesn’t have a badges system. It’s a basic sharing app with interesting features but no frills.

What does rating mean?

Every time a reviewer downloads, installs and reviews an app, he or she rates it from 1 to 5/5. Together with users’ rating, it uses to be the first thing a reader looks for.
We chose that scale because we found it easy and straightforward. Any AndroidZoom user can know at a glance if at app deserves his attention or not. As any other subjective measurement, it’s debatable, though there’re a few guidelines that we thought may be useful to all. Therefore, we’ve asked our reviewer team what we should understand when we look at an app rating.

1/5 These apps usually are in early development stages or were uploaded for testing purposes. We seldom have found fraudulent or spiteful apps that obviously are rated with the lowest score. There may be an even more seldom case, where we haven’t been able to install that app in any of our devices (and we have quite a few) and we haven’t achieved to reach its developer.

Luckily, apps rated so low are very uncommon.

2/5 More than half the apps we review fall in this category. There we find from apps that need to be improved on to apps that may be nicely completed but add nothing to the Androidverse, either because there are a lot of apps that do the same better or simply replace built-in functions making minor if any changes.

You should download it if you need that app to fulfill a particular need and haven’t already any similar app installed.

3/5 We like to highlight apps that improve the Android user experience in some way. We can be talking about a good game worth to give it a go, an app that adds some features to vanilla Android or something original, useful and or pretty well presented. It can be innovative, surprising or indeed interesting.

You can download any three out of five app without risk, though it’s always worthwhile to look for a 4/5.

4/5 We can recommend any of these apps without a doubt. To be rated with a four out of five, an app needs to be outstanding in at least its main aspects. For example, if we’re talking about a game, it’d be about graphics, gameplay or something related. If it’s about an app, not only doesn’t disappoint, but also has a smooth performance.

If you need an app of a certain category or are keen on a particular game genre, any 4/5 app will be a success for sure.

5/5 Any app rated 5 out of 5 deserves your attention. Apps rated so high are –or become- usually essential in one way or another. Even if you think you don’t need it or you don’t like that kind of game, you should check it out. Awesome apps surpass expectations and are the best way to discover your device potential.

Not only are highly recommendable, they are the breeding ground for the wonders to come in early future.

That’s all. We just wanted to share it with you all. Happy Android-rating!

Movies knowledge is culture…

So, wouldn’t you like to know more about them? For this reason, this week we’ve made a videoreview compilation of three great movies apps for Android that will help you to know about actors, dates, directors, budgets, rumours, curiosities and every single thing that surrounds films and movies. Thus, the following videoreview includes three apps: IMDb, which is a the biggest database regarding movies info; Movie Trivia which is obviously a trivia to test your knowledge regarding films and, finally, Worth Watching Lite, an interesting app with rates, reviews from critics, comments and recommendations in order to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Hope you enjoy it

Back to the movies 2

Today in AndroidZoom we’re still talking about the relationship between Android and movies. In fact, there are many Android apps that feature the world of film, but it’s kind of hard to find one that covers all the topics you want. The other day we included IMDb and two other different applications, today is time for Worth Watching Lite, Oscars Trivia and John Hughes Soundboard.

The first one this week is Worth Watching Lite, an app that uses Rotten Tomatoes score to create the lists of the upcoming movies, the current ones and even the dvd releases and top box office. That way, you can easily check out if a movie is good or at least if the critics liked it before you watch it. Also, see if your most expected movies are coming soon or not. Besides all those features, the app is well designed and the usability is excellent, making it one of the best film apps out there.

Trivias are fun and entertaining and movie trivias are among the most popular ones. Here, you’ll be able to answer as many questions as you want regarding the Academy Awards, both old hollywood and current films. The categories are actors, actresses, movies and directors and you can change whenever you want, as there’s no limited number of questions. That can be a problem if you want a little more of a challenge and competition but it’s equally entertaining and fun to test your film knowledge.

Last, but not least, we have a really curious app, especially made for those who still enjoy watching 80’s movies or are nostalgic about past times. This soundboard includes several popular and classic quotes of five of the most iconic movies from John Hughes. That is:  Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty In Pink, Weird Science and Sixteen Candles. Some of the sound quotes are: “Bueller, bueller…” or “How can I possibly be expected to handle school on a day like this?”. You can set them as ringtones, too.

Whatever you want, you got it. If you want current information about movies, choose the first app. On the contrary, if you’d like to prove your knowledge in front of your friends, download the trivia and start answering the questions. And if you’re a nostalgic from the 80s, don’t hesitate to try the soundboard.
Well, that’s been the end of our Movie related apps Week. Don’t forget to visit our brand new G+ profile, comment what any other movie app you’d recommend and share whatever you like best.
Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it“. Listen to Ferris and have a nice week, AndroidMovieholics!

Three management games videoreviewed

We’ve released a new navigable videoreview on management games, smurfing a blockbuster as Smurfs’ Village; a well-known time management game, good for all SuperMarket Mania 2 and an original game developed by an independent company, we’re talking about Game Dev Story. Hope you like to see how they are in action and remember that you can read further about these games looking for their review at AndroidZoom.com.

Don’t forget either to like it (you know, thumbs up), share it or, even better, to leave a comment about the videoreview or the games featured.

Let’s go to the movies with Android

No matter the high price of theaters, people still watch and will keep watching movies. Movies help you forget the routine of your life and entertain yourself during two hours. Movies can be watched anytime, alone, with your friends or with your partner. Movies can generate discussion and create good memories. And they can also be the stars of good Android applications.

First of all, we want to talk about the greatest of them all. IMDb, one of the best websites regarding film information (and maybe in general) has an equally good Android application. IMDb is a complete database of movies, actors, directors and many more things related to film. It includes a wide selection of trivia, trailers and reviews. If you’re in the theater, watching a movie and the actress looks really familiar… now you can just grab your phone and easily clear up your doubts and prove you were right. You can also check in whenever you’re watching a movie and vote it afterwards. Easy to use, complete and sometimes life-saver.

Sometimes you’re bored and want to check your knowledge about something. Why not about movies? Movie Trivia Taglines provides a wide selection of movie taglines (that is, the advertising poster lines). The idea is pretty good, as sometimes it depends on whether you’ve seen it or not, while others you just need to use your common sense. The design is not good, though, and the usability could be better, but in general is a really entertaining game that you can also play with your friends.

Lastly, we wanted to leave the Hollywood universe behind us and approach a different kind of film world: shorts. This app will let you watch all kind of European shorts divided into several categories and genres. This way, you’ll have access to other film perspectives, in case you want to discover new things and inspire yourself. Why not check it out? Great design and usability.

We hope you have a great movie week and enjoy these three applications. Let us know what you think, androidmovieholics!
