Google unveils Android Ice Cream

The Android alphabet is still growing up. After C (Cupcake), D (Donut), E (Eclair), F (Froyo), G (Gingerbread) and H (Honeycomb),  the time of hitherto sweetest version has come: Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), officially introduced by Google a few hours ago. This new Android version has left us open-mouthed. Let’s zoom in its main features.

Graphic interface

At first sight, we realize that the whole appearance has changed. UI is completely different, a Tron-like style wraps it entirely. It must be said that it looks wonderful with that futuristic interface. Since the first contact, we have the feeling that we’re handling with a higher-end smartphone. Perhaps the new feature that we rapidly notice is that ICS has been developed not to use physical buttons. So you can perform every single thing with the three virtual buttons placed at the bottom. These buttons smartly appear and disappear depending on when they need to be used. Regarding the desktop, the main newness is the folder creation by dragging icons one over the other (iOS style). Developer has brought together the best features of both Honeycomb and Gingerbread to generate an stunning graphic interface. And in case you don’t like it, there will be quite a bunch of launchers around Market plus those which haven’t yet come.

App drawer

The ICS app drawer brings a new interesting feature. Besides the apps tab, there’s a widget tab. From there is easier to manage our widgets, add/remove or place them wherever we want. Actually, the widget preview is specially useful to get an idea of how the widget looks like and where we will place it. What’s more, the widgets have been re-designed to be scrollable and resizable as if they were in Honeycomb.

Lockscreen

ICS Lockscreen is quite similar to Honeycomb: a circle at which you have to approach a point by dragging to unlock the screen. What’s more, it’s possible to launch the camera from the lockscreen and take a picture in record time. From the lockscreen we can display the status bar, no need to unlock the device either. However, without shadow of a doubt, the most stunning feature is the possibility to unlock the device by facial recognition. Flabbergasting.

Inputs and text

Text corrector has been improved regarding accuracy. Editing, copying and pasting is more intuitive and faster now. Likewise, speech-to-text has been enhanced: you can start talkin

g after tapping on the micro icon and, according to the presentation, it really works. The truth is that speech-to-text technology has always been Google’s spearhead long before Siri was conceived, and still is.

Usability

Until now, finding an option in the settings maze was something quite complicate. ICS has been simplified in this regard. Now it’s focused on fast access and user-friendly navigation. This is noticeable in the whole new structure.

Regarding management, ICS contains a built-in data plan monitoring app. This way we can see graphically data usage, set consumption limits, auto enabling/disabling Internet connection and notifications.

If we may paraphrase a bit, those are Android 4.0 principles, and if you don’t like them…well, it has others.

Dinner is ready

We were saying last week that now it’s harder to prepare our meals carefully and cook complex recipes due to our lack of free time. However, people want to eat well and there are many of you who still enjoy cooking and trying new recipes.

That is why, in this first Cooking Week’s post, we are going to talk about Android recipe applications and the best ways to cook your favorite meals easily and quickly.

The first of them is Recipe Search, based on the website www.allthecooks.com and a really useful tool when searching recipes. “Most popular” doesn’t mean “better”

If there’s something that we love about Android is the possibility of personalizing it at our whim. Consequently, launchers are one of the most appreciated apps by Android users, since they change the whole appearance (and even the performance) of our smartphones. We’ve reviewed (and videoreviewed) the most used/popular/downloaded Launchers for Android in previous posts. This time we’re going to show you other not-so-well-known launchers which are worth to be discovered. Thus, in this navigable videoreview you can see: Launcher 7 (Timo Kujala), Rocket Launcher (Insanity Systems) and Regina 3D Launcher (Nemustech.Android). Don’t be conservative: check them out, try them, and tell us your opinion about them. Become a real Android discoverer!

Mind your body!

Take care of yourself, your body will appreciate it

Throughout the last 50 years, the humanity has reached such technological development that has even changed our lifestyle. Technology, instead of freeing us from doing things, has introduced in our life the concept of “multitasking”. Today, we want to be everywhere, know everything, meet everybody and do it as quickly as possible. This makes us more efficient, more aware of what’s happening around and even… smarter(?). However, we’ve forgotten something behind in this rush: caring of ourselves.
Technology isn’t enemy of healthy lifestyle. Otherwise, technology provides us with some tools to monitor, advise and oversee our habits. We can barely change our work/school scheduled to leave away our stressing life. But that’s not an excuse to integrate healthy habits in our day-by-day. Technology can help us with that issue. Specially the technology that is always with us: our smartphones. This week we’re discovering Health & Fitness apps. In this post we’re going to focused on Fitness apps. Let’s zoom in it!

Jogging is one of the healthiest sport you can practice. Thanks to Endomondo you will have in your pocket a GPS tracker of time, distance, calories and speed. It records your personal bests and allows you to share them through Facebook. Thus, you will show your marks off and challenge your friends. What’s more, you can use it with accessories: headphones or pulsometer. It’s set in a user-friendly UI that allows us to manage it with simple actions. Although it can be used for other sports, jogging is the one that best fit with it. A truly recommendable choice to monitor your workout due to simplicity and accuracy.

RunKeeper is a simple and good-looking tool that tracks distance, time, pace, calories, heart rate (if you use a complementary cardio equipment) and path traveled on map. It uses GPS to track on the map your routes. Actually, you can set them before going out jogging. It makes statistics on your progresses. This is even easier to manage than other. Actually its simplicity is its strongest point, specially for those that don’t need detailed info. However, we’re missing more useful data as speed average, max and min elevation or more stats graphs. Set in a good-looking layout, this is the choice for those wh areo looking for a simple running tracker and doesn’t want to rack their brains with detailed data.

JEFIT is an app to design your gym workout plan and track your progresses. Choose your training type: full-body, specific muscles, cardio-training etc. Choose the exercises you wan to do, schedule your workout in a calendar and start to getting fit.  It shows pictures of different exercise and how to do it properly, target repetitions advising, time… The amount of exercises available it’s just insane. What’s more, you can sync your progresses with Jefit.com where you will find forums, advises, stats and many more features. Actually you can even check stats from the app. If you want to show everyone your progresses, you can share them on Facebook and Twitter. This will keep you motivated. The only flaw we’ve noticed is that’s a bit difficult to get the hang of it. If you do so, this is going to be one of the best bodybuilding tools you can find on the market.

No matter the troubled times, stay healthy anyway

Being healthy is no longer a recommendation. Healthy eating habits are of vital importance now, as our society keeps changing and we have even less time to prepare our meals and take care of ourselves. Given the great amount of fast-food that we consume and our super active lifestyles, we should really watch our diets and our health with a closer approach.

That’s why this week we’ve decided to center our attention on those apps who helps us keep our bad habits in control and consequently improve our lifestyles in a much healthy way.

Noom Weight Loss is a weight loss application that helps you achieve your goals by monitoring exercise tracking and food logging. You need to set your personal weight loss plan and workouts and start tracking everything you eat and do. In addition, it includes some tips regarding both topics. Upcoming Facebook Event

Hey discoverer!

Today’s starting the 3rd edition of AndroidZoom Cartoon Contest. Don’t you know what it is yet? It’s the First Android Cartoons handmade by Android Community! Making the most of the current social channels, like Facebook and other social networks, we want to foster the creativity among Android users. For this reason, we’ve brought the open-source philosophy to the world of cartoons releasing an original contest in which users and illustrators work together to create a cartoon Android-related.

This time we’ve changed the rules slightly in order to get to as many people as possible and make it even more fun. If you want to participate, what you have to do is to propose a dialogue for the blank bubble of the Android Cartoon that you will find in the profile picture of the following Facebook Event. What’s more, you can “vote” other proposals by giving them Facebook “likes”. The dialogue that gets more likes will be the winner (although AndroidZoom will have the last word). The winner’s dialogue will be embeded in the bubble and the name of the author at the bottom of the cartoon. All participants will receive a gift when the contest is finished.

We’ve moved the contest to a Facebook Event in order to make it more dynamic and fun. We’re going to post videos, music and other surprises. We encourage you all to do the same and participate actively.

We hope you all enjoy, share and participate in this new AndroidZoom Cartoon contest. Show the world your creativity!

Catch, play and enjoy music apps for Android

Feel the vibes coming from our next videoreview! We’ve videoreviewed games, photo apps, launchers, browsers and many other apps so far. Releasing a videoreview on great music apps for Android was just a matter of time. Here we go! We’ve made a compilation of three different music apps: music catcher, radio app and music player. All of them considered one of the best of its type. Thus, the apps you’ll discover in this videoreview are: SoundHound (SoundHound Inc.), TuneIn (TuneIn Inc.) and PowerAMP (Max MP). Follow the path to discover and play great music: listen to the radio or catch it from background music of the pub, and once you’ve it in your device, play it with a great music player.

Put the hands up in the air!
