Remembering the forgettable

Following the previous posts about keeping your life organized, we want to continue talking today about applications that will help you in your daily life. As we already said, routine life is back and so are all the things you usually forget about: doing daily exercise, wishing your friends’ a happy birthday and buying all the items you need for the week.

First of all, we have VirtuaGym Fitness, a useful application that helps you stay fit by including a list of workouts and exercises to do in a really short time. You just need to select a workout depending on the time you have and the level you want (newbie, beginner, advanced) and follow the tutorial steps. It doesn’t matter if you have a busy life, there are many exercises to do comfortably at home and if you have time to go to the gym, you can bring the app with you.

Shopping for groceries is not a really fun task and that’s probably the reason why you usually forget what you’re supposed to buy. Why carry a paper with you when you can use a simple app that makes it easier? Hungry! Shoplist is an Android tool that allows you to add and remove the items quickly and change the quantities only by sliding your finger over the name. It’s also possible to group the groceries into categories: vegetables, soup, pasta and so on.

Lastly, we know it’s hard to remember everyone’s birthday and even harder now with all our Facebook and Twitter acquaintances. Facebook might remind us but it doesn’t use notifications and we can easily forget to look at the upcoming events. EboBirthday imports birhdays from your Google, Facebook and other accounts’ contacts and organizes them. You can change all the notification settings and change the appearance of the homescreen widget easily.

We hope you welcome your routine life back with energy and enthusiasm (or at least try). Have a nice Android week and good luck with the discoveries!

Best widgets and apps to keep your life and Android organized

When we all buy a Smartphone, one of the things that first comes to our minds is that we finally have a small pocket computer, a device that includes a camera, a phone, internet, a game console and an appointment book that helps us keep everything well organized.

So one of the first things is then, the organization: calendars, agenda, task lists and any tool that does that. There are plenty of good Android applications regarding this topic and today we want to show you some that really stand out.

MyLifeOrganized

This is a very complete app that can be pretty confusing at first because of its complexity but it’s actually perfect for the demanding ones, who need to have everything controlled. Anyway, to ease us into the app’s learning process, as soon as we open the app we find a default list of already organized tasks that work as a tutorial.

If you follow the steps it’s not really complicated and at the same time you’ll see the great variety of features the app includes: options, sortings, visualizations. In the Outline section we can find all items in order of importance and in the menu we can view the tasks we need to do, the goals we’ve set, the projects that lie ahead, our favorites, the starred ones and so on. Of course, it’s also possible to add a location for each task, create infinite subtasks, establish due dates and add homescreen widgets (three sizes). This is a beta version; in the future there will be a lite and a full version (paid). Really recommended.

Organizer Widget

The standards are high but we also want to talk about other useful organization apps. Organizer Widget is simply a homescreen widget that is not really customizable but includes call detail record, messages and calendar. In the same widget we can change between three tabs and if we tap on them we’ll be redirected to the corresponding app (calls, messages…). It doesn’t include buttons so it’s really only a widget that works as a direct access and a portal to the original applications.

Executive assistant

Executive Assistant is a pretty special app: it’s not a content manager either: this one imports all the data from the majority of our apps to create a widget with all the general information. In the same widget we have: calls, calendar, tasks, mail, messages, RSS, twitter and Facebook.
All this can be set via a tutorial where we can bring all our accounts together (mail, calls, calendar and the social networks) and regarding the tasks we have a list of supported apps like Astrid and GTask. Once everything’s done you can set the app to be used as a normal widget or even as an unlock screen. Anyway, really good app to keep track of everything.

Astrid

We also want to talk about the popular Astrid, which is a great task manager and a very complete app. The interface is easy to use and that is the best thing about it. It also includes syncronization with Google tasks, Producteev and Astrid.com. It’s been widely awarded in many blogs and it has extensions, paid features, compatibility with Locale, widgets, voice recognition and voice reminders.

DGT GTD & ToDo [Alpha]

This application is still in its Alpha phase but it already stands out as a great task and list manager. It’s supported in several languages and the usability is great as it’s really easy to learn how to use it. You can create tasks, projects, lists with all the information and details you want and also syncronize all your data, although this feature it’s still in process. In the future it’ll include a notebook, too.Try it now and see its evolution.

First AZCartoon winner

The first week of AndroidZoomCartoon has come to an end and we have our beloved winner, Liew Chih Hau, with his original and witty dialogue above. The decision was tough to make because of all the good ideas and this week’s cartoon was characterized by a duel between our winner and FrasesWidget. It was our first (and we hope not the last) application contestant! It was hard but we finally reached an agreement thanks to your help with the likes: 7 vs 5.

It’s been a pleasure to share this first House cartoon with all of you and we hope to repeat this as many times as possible. Thanks to the open source philosophy of this contest we offered everybody the chance to take part in it and you provided us with the best dialogues for the first Android cartoons. Everybody wins.

Thanks everyone for participating in the contest and for coming up with such original creations. What do you think about the winner dialogue? Was it your favorite? What would you improve?

You didn’t win or forget to take part? Don’t worry because this is far from over. You’ll have the chance to win the contest in further editions. Don’t forget to take part in the next AZCartoon which will land next week ;)

Have a nice Android weekend!

Back to school with Android

It’s almost middle of September, vacations are over and routine life is back and it’s here to stay.

College life has its good things. Seeing your friends on a daily basis and enjoying your independence again are some of appeals, but it also has disadvantages that can be pretty annoying like having to study, doing daily homework, meeting up with colleagues and do lots of teamwork; and the most common of them all: stressing yourself out.

Paper Schedulers might still be used but they are prone to be lost due to the great quantity of papers that we carry with us during the week. The best way to plan your classes is to have a virtual scheduler.

Class Schedule

Class Schedule is a school-like schedule, which is still pretty new and has some things to improve (relating design and visualization) but it works well and does what it’s supposed to. It provides a timetable where you just need to tap on the hour period and write the name of the class (only three letters, though), enter more details and the class duration. It’s simple, easy to use and the possibility of changing the colors makes it look good.

Dropbox

Dropbox is a really helpful tool for everyone. The free version includes 2 Gb storage and 250 Mb extra for each friend you invite to join Dropbox. You can backup all the data you need such as colleagues contact information, notes regarding homework and so on to the cloud. You just need to install it, create a Dropbox account and start saving all the useful stuff.

Google Docs Last but not least, we have Google Docs, the android application based on the popular online feature. If you’re tired of carrying your laptop to class and might prefer to use your Android device instead, Google Docs makes the task easier. After creating a new document, you just need to start writing class notes, beginning your projects and noting down ideas for later developing them.

We want to remind you that you can still take part in the AndroidZoomCartoon contest by writing an original dialogue under this week’s cartoon of House (here). What are you waiting for?

Happy work or college comeback

Probably against our will, September has already come. And we all know what that means: come back to work or to college. Come back to boring classes, alarms, schedule, meetings, business cards, reports, rush and stress. However, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare if we know how to handle it. Thanks to our Android, September will never be such tough. It provides us with some tools to face our day-to-day.

Throughout this week we’re going to propose you some app discoveries that will help you to organize whether your work or college life. Let’s zoom in them!

Alarm Clock Plus

Routine comeback starts from the beginning: the alarm ringing. We all know that after three days you start to detest the alarm tone. What’s more, sometimes we forget to set it before going to sleep. Alarm Clock Plus is a great choice to avoid these situations. It allows you to set as many alarms as you need and choose the days you want it to ring. There’s also a nap alarm in which you choose how long you want to be taking a nap (in minutes). You can choose a ringtone, mp3 songs or launching an app as alarm tone. You can also set the way you want it ringing: ascendant, loud, soft, etc. You can set the times you want to repeat the alarm and the period, and many other options like hour bell, screen saver, weather info, widgets, white noise. The perfect tool to get always sharp at work, with a smiling face.

Android Agenda Widget

After waking up and having breakfast, next thing you have to do is checking your schedule. If it’s properly organized, facing the day will be way easier. Best way to see at a glance your schedule is placing a screen widget on your Android. This Agenda Widget has lots of different size widget (up to 15) that integrates Gmail calendar, Gtasks, Astrid and many other data resources. This way you will be always aware of the events you have to attend. Its strongest point is that it’s highly configurable regarding appearance: design it at your whim. Thus, regarding amount of widgets, customizable appearance and data resources this is one of the best Android calendar widgets.

Coming back to work is easy if you let your Android managing your schedule. Give it a go!

CamCard Lite – Business Card R

Coming back to work also means start to fill your wallet of tenths of business card. It’s time to solve this situation by putting some order on it. Your Android and CamCard will help you on such issue. CamCard Lite captures business card images by using your phone back camera as a scanner. It catches first names, last name, phone, e-mail, address and other extra info and put it into form labels. By this way you will be able to turn a physical business card into a vcard. Once you’ve caught all the data, confirm that everything is in its label and save it You will be able then to save the contact to your phonebook or to the app database, save it to your Gmail account or share it by SMS or other means. It also scans the image of the business card if it has one. It’s quite accurate and it even lets you generating and reading QR Codes for contact’s content.
