Developer’s Dashboard enhanced

Today, in Android Zoom, we want to introduce our new improved section, the developer dashboard. As you can see now, we’ve made changes to the old layout and we’ve also added new features.

So if you’re a developer and you’re wondering what you should do, the first step would be to register yourself as one, that is, clicking on the top link “Are you a developer”, located under an app’s rating. After that, you can have access to your dashboard just by tapping on “My Menu” and selecting “My Applications”.

In this new dashboard, you can customize your personal page by adding the logo of your company as well as writing a brief “description” about the company’s history and other useful information. Those features and the “Monitor detailed statistics” are the main innovations that we want to stand out. This particular statistics show graphs about the app’s page views and downloads for a given period.

Besides that, there are other existing features also available, such as the “.Apk Upload”, which enhances the user experience by increasing downloading channels. This would particularly help some of the users who cannot download the apps directly from the Android Market.

Last but not least, there is the “Issues received” section, where you can receive feedback from your app’s users in order to acknowledge their opinions and requests.

To sum it all up, the improved AZ developer’s dashboard helps you offer a better service to your app’s users. What’s more, it becomes a platform to introduce yourself and your apps to the Android community.

Happy new developer’s dashboard discovery!

The battle of the Launchers

Since the whole Android OS is open-sourced, its keystone lies precisely on personalizing. That’s it: the power to the people (or the users). There are lots of apps that lets you change your Android performance, appearance or interface. Without shadow of a doubt the most used apps for changing the default appearance of your Android are the launchers. A launcher is an app that basically changes the appearance of the dock, app drawer, widgets and icons of your Android as well as its performance. It wide open the customizing range of your device. Welcome to the Launchers Week in AndroidZoom.

Today we’re going to zoom in the most popular launchers on the market: LauncherPro, ADW.Launcher and Go Launcher EX. Let’s start!

LauncherPro

LauncherPro is probably the most downloaded (and so used) launcher on the market. It contains a minimalist scrolilng dock with five icons, a configurable app drawer vertical-scrolling (Nexus 3D included), 1-7 home screens high configurable (transitions, grid size, labels, backgrounds…).
However, the strongest point of LauncherPro is its Widgets (although you have to upgrade to LauncherPro Plus, $2.99). Highly configurable widgets to have everything at your fingertips. LauncherPRO is focused on fast access, professional widgets and improved performance. If you give more importance to performance instead of colorful themes, this is your launcher.

ADW.Launcher

This is a launcher from a different approach. While LauncherPro is focused on fast performance, ADW.Launcher is about appearance. Precisely for that it was the first releasing launcher themes and it’s actually the one with the biggest collection of them (500+). As well as LauncherPro changes dock, icons an app drawer. It has even more settings than LauncherPro but most of them are related to appearance (and some of them are useless). It works slower than others (especially than  LauncherPro). Anyway, we recommend you to take a glance at some of the themes. You will fall in love with some of theme and you’ll probably won’t care about the rest.

Go Launcher EX

It’s a kind of mix of LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher, although it has also unique features. From our point of view, this is the most complete Launcher on the market. However, it doesn’t mean the “best” (that depends on what you’re looking for). Go Launcher EX is fast, there’s no screen limit, it contains a swipable and customizable dock, the app drawer is highly-configurable (icon effect, transition effects, background, “running apps” tab with task killer included, grid size…), and a wide range of features to improve your Android performance. What’s more, it also supports themes, not as many as ADW.Launcher, but there are lots of them. There are free and paid widgets and lots of add-ons and plug-ins (i.e. the unread sms/mms/gmail/calls counter).
Go Launcher EX is probably the most balanced launcher. Maybe it’s that way because it mixes the best features of other launchers. Anyway, this is our option.

There are though some other alternative launcher, not as popular as these, but which are getting good feedback for users: Launcher 7, Zeam Launcher, DXHome and many others.

What’s yours?

I don’t even wanna hear: I’m bored. You’re on vacation!

You’re already there. You’ve arrived to your holiday destination and you’ve got plenty of time to spare. However, not everything will be visiting tourist places and doing exciting things, in fact, one of the best things about being on vacation means being able to spend your time doing nothing. And we’re more than happy to help you make the most of that moments.

Going to the beach may be synonymous with sleeping, swimming and doing some exercise; but it’s also the ideal moment for playing some little puzzle game. Cut the rope is the perfect choice: the ultimate goal is to feed the monster some candy and collect all the stars by strategically releasing them from the rope where they are hold. The mechanism can be either using gears or pulleys and the difficulty keeps increasing on each level. With the popular scoring system of the three star rating, Cut the rope is a fun, entertaining and highly addictive game for your summer holidays.

It’s nap time and you can’t sleep (you woke up too late) nor go outside because it’s too hot out there. Everyone’s either sleeping or watching boring TV shows and you don’t know what to do. The Kindle app is the one solution you’re looking for. When you download it, your Android device will turn into a useful Kindle reader and you’ll have access to Amazon’s huge book database so you can choose the one you prefer.

Last but not least, after enjoying a whole day in the beach, you receive that annoying call from your boss: “Where’s the report I asked you for?” Damn! It’s in your laptop. Then is when you start missing Internet connection beyond your smartphone. No worries. There are apps that can save your life in this kind of situations. One of them is PdaNet. PdaNet turns your Android into a hotspot and allows your computer to go online through your mobile phone connection (Windows and Mac supported). You just need to download the app and then connect your Android to your computer by USB or Bluetooth DUN. There are other similar apps that supports WiFi tether, but the best ones either requires root (e.g. Barnacle WiFi Tether) or are paid.

Happy summer-chilling apps discovery!

Holidays, oh! such Holy Days!

It’s holidays time. Not for everybody, of course (we’re still working). But half of the world is travelling to their summer destinations. We hope you’ll be part of the lucky ones. Whether if you are or not, you’ll find useful today’s post for when it comes the time to pack the suitcase and leave.

Since your Android has become an add-on of yourself, surely you will bring it with you during the trip. Thus, today we’re going to zoom in those apps that will help you out on the planning of your holidays trip. That means, the apps which are recommendable to install before leaving.

First, check the weather out. Actually, the weather is worth to be taken in account since is something that could make your holidays become a dream or a nightmare. Be sure that you’ll get the weather you expect to by checking it before leaving with a great weather app like The Weather Channel. This app has really improved its performance since last update. The interface has been enhanced. Now it’s more intuitive, good-looking and user-friendly. The navigation is easier and faster and the search bar is way less intrusive. Thanks to The Weather Channel you will have comprehensive knowledge about predictions from wherever in the World. Be sure that you’re getting a dreamy holidays.

Once you’ve checked the weather on your destination, it’s time to book flight, hostels, restaurants and even plan what to do nearby the place. That’s what TripAdvisor allows you to do. TripAdvisor is probably the most complete travel guide for Android. Actually it’s like having hundreds of travel guides in your pocket. It has a huge database of hotels, restaurants, flights, forums, things to do and much more just a one-click away from you. What’s even better is that the most of that places, spectacles, events, etc. have a review from other people that have already been there.

Finally, you will need a mapping app to set your own location on your destination and to find, by this way, the places you want to visit. Likewise, you’ll probably need a GPS if you’ve rented a car to move nearby the place. Which Android app can perform all of this best? You’re right, our beloved Google Maps. If you don’t have it installed in your Android yet, just do it! You have even more reasons to do it since the last update: now you can download maps to navigate through them offline.

Happy Summer apps discovery!

Android’s coming from the stars

We’re going to finish this galactic week by introducing you two must-have apps for those astronomy lovers.

First off, the well-known and beloved Google Sky Maps. It’s summer in the Northern hemisphere and the weather invites going out by night and take a look at the stars. Most of us have enjoyed looking at the stars on places where pollution doesn’t hide them. But if you’re in a big city you’ll probably find annoying this kind of smoke’s curtain which doesn’t let you appreciate the beauty of the nightly sky view. No worries. Relax. Lie down on the grass alone or in good company, unlock your Android, launch Google Sky Maps and enjoy the view. Discover constellations, place them on the sky and learn more about them. Google Sky Maps is like having a Google Maps from the opposite point of view. Leave the worldly problems down there in the subway: it’s time to let your dreams fly through the stars.

However, the World isn’t just made up by dreamers. For those who want to have a deeper scientific knowledge about what’s going on up there we have to say: NASA’s expertise has entered scene. You will be up-to-date about ongoing NASA’s projects by the Twitter/Facebook News feed integrated in the app. What’s more, you will be able to watch impressive videos from NASA TV as well as to get thousand of planets and stars pictures. Be aware of the missions’ schedule and become and expert on the issue.

Happy Universe’s apps discovering!

New version of the Android Market released

The rumors have finally come true: the new version of the Android Market is already here. Throughout this week the Android users around the world (starting from the USA) will get an update of the Android Market that will completely change its appearance and performance. We couldn’t stay aside, so let’s zoom in it!

First off, the new design is inspired by Windows Phone 7 applications store, regarding both distribution and navigation. The home screen is divided in three frames: featured apps, categories and the browser. This distribution is quite more user-friendly and serves a dual premise: help the users, let the users do. That means: the “featured apps” are suggestions from the Market provider (and probably a new source of business), and the categories are just an open door to let the users search and find apps by themselves. There are four category-tabs displayed on the home screen: apps, games books and movies. However, this distribution won’t be the same for all countries because of “books” and “movies” lets access to Google Books and Google Movies, not available everywhere.

Regarding navigation, this new update of the market changes the rules of the game. Until now, the market was designed to search, find and leave. The browser was the keystone. Now, Google wants to make it a market “to stay”, a place to navigate through and find apps out. The keystone is the scroll. If you scroll it down from the home, you will see more featured apps. If you scroll right, you will go through top app streams: free, paid, grossing, new releases, most popular. Finally, if you scroll left from the home, you get to the full list of categories.

The new version of the Android Market makes finding apps something faster and easier. It contributes to enhance the Android community by improving user experience. We should really appreciate that. However, we think that this new market is giving too much priority to the “Top” apps (via promoting them). Our opinion is it shouldn’t be this way (at least not only) because there are coming up great apps every day that need to be discovered (not all developers have the resources to promote them). And there’s where we (AndroidZoom) have something to say.

Within a community, everyone plays a role and contributes to help the others with their own knowledge and skills. Thus, the new Android Market is providing a great (and improved) service. AndroidZoom is contributing to enhance Android by helping you to discover the best apps. We’re proud of our Trends tab and many other features, on Monday we launched our Youtube Channel, and we’re working hard on a bunch of surprises and new features to help users and developers alike. In the end, we are all in the same boat and the goal is shared: to improve the Android user experience, enlarge and strengthen the Android community and let everyone choose how his smartphone should be.

New AndroidZoom Youtube Channel.

On Friday, the last of the NASA space shuttles was launched in its last mission. We left behind thirty years of awe and amazement. Nearly all of us who work every day here at AZ’s HQ, grew up dreaming about become astronauts, as many of you surely did, too. We were stuck to the TV when Challenger and Columbia left us, because those tragedies were meant to happen for a reason. We believed that there’d be shuttles landing on Mars someday and that we’ll be there stuck to the TV again in a vain try of feeling what our parents had to feel on 1969.

A goodbye doesn’t mean that we can’t welcome something new. That’s applicable to us, too. As you should already notice, we’re working on a lot of new things, and you can’t realize the surprises that are around the corner. We’ve become aware of our need to advance further and that good things can always be made better.

We proudly launch our own brand new Androidzoom YouTube Channel. There you’ll find not only our introduction video, but also the interesting videos and Android-related channels we find out. Soon, we’ll upload new videos about AZ news and website features. Stay tuned!

Developers are beginning to give priority to Android

It is widely known that until now, maybe not all but most of the popular apps available for Android were firstly created for iOS, and Android users had to wait for their version to come out after it had succeeded with the iPhones.
Examples such as Whatsapp for Android proved two important things: first of all, iOS had a good app ecosystem after many years in the market; and secondly, app developers were beginning to pay more attention to newcomers like Android, who were making a great effort to gain more users with the help of phone manufacturers.

However, it’s not only about having a bigger number of users but also for the possibilities that Android itself offers…

Developers were trying to fill a gap in a new market and their trust in Android became even more evident when successful iOS apps were brought to Android for free. Some of them were Whatsapp (free the first year) and the much talked about Angry Birds, one of the most downloaded iPhone games, whose users couldn’t help but feel surprised when faced with Android users claiming “I also have it, it’s free for Android”.

The truth is that the app developing tendencies are starting to change. Earlier, most of the applications were developed for iPhone, where they had an excellent reception and a great number of users surrounding a single device. However, factors such as the 500.000 daily Android activations and the possibility of broading its horizons to more phone manufacturer brands are causing developers to focus more and more on Android and even to consider it their first option.

That’s exactly what’s happening with FourSquare, one of the best check-in services based in geotagging and also one of the most populars regarding the new tendency of combining related offers. Foursquare has recently included a new function, Notifications (internal notifications), only available for Android users (for now).

These new notifications let you know about check-in comments and pictures, advices, friends registers, etc. This feature is only available for Android users, whom FourSquare dedicates the following statement:

Android needs some early-access love!” – Dennis Crowley (FourSquare Co-Founder)

Some people point out that Android could start being used as a testing ground before launching new functions or applications to iOS, but on the contrary, we believe that plenty of developers and companies are starting to pledge their commitment to Android and its increasingly potential is becoming a major point of reference.

Android is to Iphone what Google+ is to Facebook

As soon as Google+ came out and we noticed people’s first reactions, we realized and understood what the title states: Android is to Iphone what Google+ is to Facebook.

Maybe some of you already know what we mean but we’re going to add something else anyway: Google+, Twitter or any Social Network owe to smartphones like Android the power and popularity they’ve achieved; and thanks to internet connected mobiles, their use has widely increased and strong links have been created with this networks. Communication through them is established anywhere at anytime.

But let’s get straight to the point: Iphone and Facebook as a comparison to Android and Google+. Because everything is narrowed to this: a silent war where the user is the one who gets to decide which one will eventually win.

There are two main Android users types: there are those who use it because they like it, because it was good priced; they don’t really know what it is, but they like it because it allows them to do plenty of things. This group is a great part of the total number of users.

The others are the ones that don’t like the iPhone, in fact, they even hate it and consider Android the perfect solution, as it has everything that an iPhone hasn’t. They buy Android because they dislike the alternative. Because let’s face it, if your company is an Apple-ish company, you need to know that you’ll come across as many friends and fans as enemies waiting for the perfect chance to attack.
When iPhone was launched, most people expected a reaction, they waited for something to come out as a response to the new generation’s reality that lied ahead; and there it was, Android. Android as the alternative, the opposite side.

Facebook is in this particular case, very similar to Apple: it was the one that came first, the one who ruled and still rules the social network universe. But on its way to the top, Facebook has managed to get plenty of dissatisfied users, users that literally hate the network and are looking forward to a competitive alternative; as it happened with the iPhone. And so Google+ arrived, offering the freedom and philosophy that a social network is supposed to deserve. If monopolies are punished in real life, so they are in the virtual world, and the hierarchy is in danger of being pulled down.

We still don’t know what will Google+ do, because as opposite as those who thought that it was more similar to Twitter than to Facebook, it’s actually a half-way point between the two of them: a network based in sharing content, a mix between Tumblr and some forums. What we really do know is that the smartphones are the driving forces of these social networks and that Google+ has in Android the best possible ally in this silent war.

People react to established and standard patterns; they want to renew themselves within, differentiate from the rest and be a part of one side or the other. Because in the end, competitivity is genetic, healthy, a useful tool that enables people and companies to make progress and improve.

Owl or Sparrow, what’s your choice?

In the last times, there are coming up lots of “multiple social networks clients” which main purpose is to cover a rising need: to manage together our different social networks accounts in a single app. But when you start to focus on the issue you realize that there are just two basic choices: Tweetdeck and Hootsuite. Both “muti-social network managers” are available in a desktop version and in a mobile app for different platforms. In this post, we’re going to shed some light on this quarrel focusing on both Android apps.

Multiple accounts

Both Android apps supports Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare. Tweetdeck also supports Google Buzz and Hootsuite integrates WordPress. Regarding that, both cover the most used social networks (we mainly use it for Facebook and Twitter) except LinkedIn. The question that raises is: when will they integrate LinkedIN? And specially, when will they integrate Google+??

Interface

This is always a matter of taste, but we think that Tweetdeck is which wins this round. Although both are set in customizable streams in which you can defined what to show (News Feeds, Retweets, Mentions…), Tweetdeck has a more friendly-user interface. The reasons: black background with light text, thinner columns that allows you to see more at a glance and finally, the colored scrollbar for those tweets/post you haven’t read yet. What’s more, Tweetdeck integrates Facebook’s News Feed and Twitter’s Home in the same column. Hootsuite doesn’t.

Main Features

Both Hootsuite and Tweetdeck lets you to post Facebook and Twitter at the same time, add new accounts, add/delete/set streams from the app, post, retweet, “like”, post location, and much more.Regarding searching friends or hashtags is way much easier in Hootsuite (Tweetdeck need to create a new stream for that purpose). However, no one of them has auto-complete, What’s more, Hootsuite lets you access the stats from the app, Tweetdeck doesn’t (even it includes stats in the desktop version). That’s an added value, but in a app version we don’t find it really useful. What’s more, Tweetdeck includes deck.ly, the feature that allows you to post tweets 140+ characters. We think it kills the essence of Twitter and it should be considered as a flaw. Hootsuite doesn’t go on this issues.

Resources

Hootsuite seems to be less data-hungry than Tweetdeck, probably due to its sober interface.

Widget

Surprisingly, Hootsuite for Android doesn’t have a screen widget. That’s a lack that should be solved as soon as possible. Tweetdeck overtake Hootsuite in this sense since it contains different size widgets (for posting and shortcut to columns). Actually, the posting widget lets you to take a picture and it integrates (and shorten) it automatically to publish it on Twitter or Facebook (can post on both at the same time).

Conclusion

From our point of view, Tweetdeck wins this take because of its simplicity, its user-friendly interface and its screen widgets. It’s our choice for Android. However, we think that Hootsuite overtakes Tweetdeck by far in the desktop version. First, because Tweetdeck is a software that needs to be installed and Hootsuite is a web app. What’s more regarding stats and professional tools to track is more sophisticated. Likewise, Hootsuite is way faster than Tweetdeck in the desktop version.

So, our choice is Tweetdeck in our Android, Hootsuite in our computer.  What’s yours?
