Whatever became of that Blackberry of yours?

The blog this week will be focusing on the Android service by itself, so expect more posts about its benefits and features.

It is a well-known fact that Android Smartphones are becoming more and more relevant every day. Besides being the global leaders in regards to smartphone software, Android has managed to gain popularity in view of the fact that it provides a large number of Apps for its users, fact that helps to expand the whole mobile experience, which is the main desirable characteristic of the current smartphones.

The main difference between Android and Blackberry is the purpose of the mobile itself. At first, it was clear that Blackberry was a business-oriented device and concentrated merely in the e-mail service, whereas Android had always kept its preference for the applications and the possibility of customization.

As time goes by, Blackberry seems to practically have lost its primal purpose and it’s willing to attract a great number of young users, creating and adding services such as Blackberry Messenger and other apps more addressed to younger audiences. But at the same time, these smartphones continue to be too formal for some users, who would want a more personalized device.

Android Smartphones are also excellent in terms of e-mail and messaging, but what really stands out, as we’ve mentioned before, is the great variety of apps that it includes, as well as the interfaces for social media services, such as Facebook or Twitter. That and an easy and well-structured functionality is what make Android mobiles an excellent choice when faced with the eternal dilemma: “Which smartphone should I buy?”

The first app featured today is iRunner, an addictive and fun game which we reviewed last Friday. It will never work on a Blackberry, so check it out if you have an Android!

The last, something essential. Google Docs shows how an Android can be as useful for work like any Blackberry, if not more.

Androidzoom launches Spanish website.

In Androidzoom, we consider very important that the spirit of Android reaches around the world and arrives to everybody. Despite the great effort Google made to improve its translator, language remains a barrier to many people. Therefore, we are proud to introduce the latest enhancement to our website. From now on, Spanish speakers may choose to see it in their language, just going to the bottom right of the page they will see a dropbox where they can choose between English and Spanish.

Unfortunately, reviews and the descriptions given by the developers will continue in English, at least for now.

To all our other friends around the world, know that soon we will be adding more available languages, so that no one will be left without discovering the best Android apps.

¡Disfrútenlo, amigos! (enjoy it, folks!)

Beautiful Widgets Lite, the best app to customize your Android.

We’re sure that you have heard about the most downloaded customization app for Android, Beautiful Widgets

Discover more Android apps

We are in love with it. Its developer has finally decided to launch a Lite version two days ago.

That means that many of us can feel lucky, because we can try it before leaping to the paid version.

Obviously, it doesn’t support all the options of the paid version, but for a start, it certainly is not bad. The offer is for a limited time. I only tell you that was the first app that I would gladly pay for my Android.

Shall we see what we can find in Beautiful Widgets Lite? :

4 “Super Clock” widgets (sizes: 4 × 1, 4 × 2, 4 x 3 and 2 × 1)

2 Weather widgets (sizes: 4 × 1 and 1 × 1)

Super Clock widgets are those that include date, time and animated weather. Settings are quite limited, but there are nice skins available. You can also change the battery icon: choose between Gingerbread style and the circular icon.

Beautiful Widgets Lite doesn’t include Accuweather to know what the weather like around you is or where you are going to. In exchange, you can have the moon phases on your screen, which is really cool.

You know how much we like to recommend the best Android apps. We didn’t want to miss this opportunity since those guys at LevelUp Studios have done a really good job. And, as customizing our devices is the Android essence, we believe that widgets are the best way to start.

Before we say goodbye, here’s the video they have just uploaded of their star app.

I don’t know if you understand me, but we’re communicated all day long.

If there’s one point in which the smartphones has broken down all the walls is on communication. Two factors are responsible: the Internet connection in the mobile phones and the mobile power in terms of technology. The result of having powerful mobile phones connected to the Internet is that we have an open window to the world in our pockets.

But, how have the smartphones changed the way we communicate? Basically in three aspects:

Free

The success of apps like Whatsapp, Kakaotalk or Skype, among others, lies precisely in that they’re free. Actually, they’ve become a substitute for SMS/MMS and calls.

Whatsapp and Kakaotalk are multiplatform mobile messenger service to send text messages, contacts, multimedia files or even your current location to your contacts. They both are a perfect replacement for SMS/MMS due to they’re real-time, free (or low-cost) and multiplatform. There aren’t big differences between them apart form the interface and some specific features. Choosing one or another just depends on which of them is the one that most of your contacts use (because there’s no integration between them).

Skype, even though, it also could be a SMS/MMS substitute (because it includes chat messenger) is certainly oriented to calls and videocalls. That means, it’s a replacement for paid-calls. It’s free and allows us to give free calls. The benefits of phone operators lies no more in the calls and SMS/MMS fares, but in the data network fare.

Personalized

The smartphones have greatly boosted the “free of choice”. That’s it, we can customize even the least details of our phones; Android especially has shortened the life-time of the “default” features. One example of this is that some apps like HandcentSMS and ChompSMS are coming up. They both are a substitute for the default Android messaging manager. They include lots of extra features to change the appearance and performance of the SMS/MMS app: chat-style bubbles, contact pictures, quick reply, signatures, templates, blacklisting, etc. Given that not everyone has an smartphone yet and we will have to continue sending some SMS/MMS so often, at least this kind of apps let us to do it our way.

Connected

Finally, the smartphones have allowed us to keep online 24/7, wherever we are. That’s precisely what has improved the communication among us by not being subjected to a specific location. Thanks to apps like Ebuddy, which is an app that integrates the instant messaging service of different platforms: Facebook, MSN Messenger, Yahoo!, Gtalk… we can chat with our contacts for free from our Android. Other important tools that keep us up-to-date are the e-mailing apps for Android. The starred one in this sense is Gmail for Android, the official Google e-mailing service. Receiving and sending e-mailings it’s something faster and more fluent now, since your inbox is down there, in your pocket.

TapTap Revenge 4: dancing to the market’s beat.

When the first smartphones appeared, one of the things we asked ourselves was what kind of games would jump from home to our pocket. There were several safe bets, e.g. all PuzzleBubblish games; and a few surprises such Tower Defense.

At the end, most of the games we play when we’re waiting the bus are versions of flash games or more or less achieved adaptations of old arcade games.

TapTapRevenge 4 comes from Guitar Hero series, which inherit the spirit from those lovable dance machines. You can like it or not, but no one can deny that’s quite original and targets a wider market than many other more classical games. Having single and multiplayer, online and offline game modes is a guarantee to success. And above all, it’s as funny as any other bestselling games. TapTap 4 also includes a wonderful in-app purchase system, so we can say it seems to be the spearhead of games to come.

Throughout this week we’ve been discussing several options in an attempt to predict the future of smartphone gaming. On Monday we said that Angry Birds and Stupid Zombies are on the right track, but there’s a different way represented by TapTap4. Maybe one day games like these will come installed by default on our phones and we will see that as normal as when we found the Snake in our old and beloved dullphones.

Guerrilla Bob, the Arcades’ revival

Arcade games are being reinvented in the smartphones. Guerrilla Bob is an example of how this game genre can be boost.

Guerrilla Bob is an Arcade game 3D-based graphics in which you’re guerrilla called Bob whose aim is to survive lots of enemies that want to see you dead. The only way to achieve it is by killing them using different weapons: machine gun, timed bombs, molotov cocktail, grenade launcher… and many other. You will have to collect money from the dead enemies and use it to buy weaponry in the shop. There are different game modes: Story Campaign, split into Arcade mode, where Bob fights for fame and Mercenary mode , where Bob fights for fortune. The Classic Survival Mode is the endless enemies one. In Wave Attack Mode you fight against waves of baddies and Bob can access the shop to purchase weaponry.

Until this, it could seem this is a classic Arcade game, but it isn’t. It has some specific features that makes it a new generation arcade game:

- First, it has been developed to be played on a mobile phone. So the gameplay is a bit different, especially regarding the controls. It includes an invisible screen-joypad that uses both screen-sides: left-side to move and the right-side to aim and shoot.

- Second, the online multiplayer mode. There are single and CO-OP multiplayer mode in the most of the classic arcades. Thanks to the smartphones, the online multiplayer mode has been included in the new arcades. Now, we can play against our friends, no matter if they’re Android or iOS. This is one of the main reasons of the revival of this kind of games.

- Finally, even though it’s a game developed to be played on mobile phones, it’s not based just on run and tap on the screen. That’s it, it’s a very complete game. There are different game modes, weaponry store, 3D graphics and many other features that space it out from the simple games.

We are glad to see that these new features are giving a boost to the Arcades. They’ve been forgotten too long.

The future in our pocket

SpeedX 3D is one of those Android game that unlocks the real potential of our mobile devices. By using the acceleremoter and 3D glasses, it takes us to the future we hadn’t even imagined.

SpeedX 3D is a speed tunnel experience where you will have to use the accelerometer to avoid obstacles on the way. The 3D graphics are just impressive as well as its fluency. But what’s really surprising is that SpeedX 3D is the only game in the market specifically developed to be displayed on 3D. That’s, to play it with 3D glasses! If you can catch a pair, give it a try and let us know if it really works, because we couldn’t manage to do it yet.

The control work with the accelerometer (that means, by moving and your device as a steer wheel). Thus, as larger is your screen the better you will see and play the game. It could be just awesome playing it on tablets (Xoom and Galaxy Tabs supported) and wearing a 3D glasses. The game response is much than we expect: no lag, no forceclosings in the devices we have tried it. Perfect. And all this for free with ads (full version), or £0.89 with no ads.

This type of games that take advantage of all the potential of our devices make us think of where the boundaries of technology are. It would have been impossible few years ago to imagine ourselves with terminals that powerful in our pockets. Today is a reality. And despite the fear of some people, we keep walking by that way. Where will it take? We don’t certainly know , but we just hope it will help us to improve our productivity, entertaining and happiness with apps like the one we recommend you today.

Super Dynamite Fishing, the strength of the originality

Super Dynamite is one of those game which becomes successful  thanks to its originality and high playability.

We’ve seen how a lot of classic games has been adapted to Android platform. Likewise, we’ve seen how an old game idea have become a new Android game, different themed but similar gameplay. Actually the most of the games in the market are this kind. This is due to both it’s difficult to create an original game and it’s also risky, since there aren’t evidence of its impact on the public. But sometimes an original game comes up, and it’s originality becomes its main strenght. That’s the case of Super Dynamite Fishing.

Gameplot is: you’re an untactful redneck fisher with a strange fishing technique: throwing explosives to the sea to catch the fishes once they’re drifting dead. There are different kind of fishes as well as a wide range of explosives to kill them. As you progresses through levels, you will get better weaponry and improved boats that will help you to face the increasing complexity. The gameplay could seems stupid and rude but no one can deny that it’s original.

It’s originality as well as its funny comic-based graphics and its different game modes make it high playable. A complete game with great amount of levels, achievements system and different game modes. And what’s better, Super Dynamite Fishing is free with non-intrusive ads.

We can state that being original, creative and pioneer is one of the way to success. Probably, the best way. First come, first win.

Stupid Zombies or how to be on the right track

As we have introduced in previous post, we are starting a section in which we will review, every week, featured apps & games from each category. Hope it will help you to discover great apps & games. So… Welcome to “Arcade & Action Games Week”!

In Stupid Zombies you embody a redneck with a loaded shotgun whose aim is to shoot all the zombies around down. You will have to aim in the direction you want to fire and then tap on the screen to shoot a bouncy bullet. The bullet will impact on the zombies straight killing them or will bounce off the walls destroying structures that will fall over them. The less bullets you need to kill all the zombies, the more score you will get. Depending on your score you will gain one, two or three stars. You will be able to share your achievements on Feint online leadboards. It will ensure you loads of fun since it includes 480 different levels and the complexity increases as you advance through them. Stupid Zombies is a well-developed game set in comic-like graphics. And it’s free (with ads but not really intrusive).

The gameplay isn’t so original though. Actually it reminds us well-known Angry Birds. It seems that lots of this kind are coming up trying to be as successful as Rovio. It’s true that being the first matters, but Angry Birds is even better than the others in some aspects. Regarding Stupid Zombies:

- The main difference we’ve found is the complexity of the game: Stupid Zombies is much easier to pass levels than Angry Birds. Probably that’s the main reason for what it includes such amount of levels.

- Stupid Zombies just has one kind of shotgun while Angry Birds has a wide range of birds with unique skills that have to be used to destroy different structures. That greatly increases the playability of the game. Stupid Zombies could be improved in that point.

- Angry Birds is a catch-all game, that’s, suitable for all audiences. Stupid Zombies though, for the theme itself, has a more restricted public.

Despite of that, Stupid Zombies is a great game which is on the right track, one of those that could face Rovio’s franchise. The developers have done a great job. And the consequence is a real fun and addictive game truly recommendable.

Starting on Monday

We are glad to announce that from next week AndroidZoom is starting a new section called “Apps & Games Week”. The aim is to review, every week, featured apps & games from each category. So next week we will publish the first post of this series: “Arcade & Action games Week”. We have tried to review on it some of this kind of games that seem outstanding to us. We hope it will help you to discover, every week, the best apps and games in each category.

In order to celebrate the opening of this new section, we want to share with you some good news. We have read via Mashable that Rovio is rolling out the new Angry Birds Rio Beach Volleyball by the end of the week. Actually, Rovio has announced a few weeks ago that there will be a new release of Angry Birds Rio every month until November. And it seems they’re fulfilling it. Check the trailer out.

Another important news regarding Angry Birds comes from the Google I/O celebrated yesterday: soon we will be able to play Angry Birds in the web browser. Rovio will offer it in the Chrome Web Store with specific features.

Angry Birds franchise is spreading like wild fire, jumping from one platform to another. Besides the original gameplot and the well-developed game, the keystone of its success lies on the Rovio’s client-oriented policy. They’re always quenching our thirst with new releases that includes extra levels, more kind of birds and different environments. What’s more, they’ve found their way to make the most of its original idea by creating an Angry Birds shop where you are able to purchase merchandising. We have seen plush toys and cases so far, but more stuff (ties, bags) is coming. We have to make a critique in this sense: there are not all the Angry Birds in plush toys, solve it soon please!

Anyway, Rovio and its Angry Birds are blazing a path that many others ought to follow.

Happy new AZ section discovery!
